On October 11, 2008, six Deaf people, one Hearing interpreter and one Hard of Hearing person met at St Patrick's Church in Urbana, IL. Father Joe Mulcrone came from Chicago to talk to us about St Paul. He had some very fascinating facts about St. Paul, including the fact that he (St Paul) was born in Tarsus, which would now be in about southern Turkey. St Paul was born a Jew, knew Greek, and was also a Roman citizen because of his birthplace. All of these things were very important later in St Paul's life. We also had a great discussion on things like "why do we suffer?" It was a great afternoon. Afterwards, everyone had a chance to go to confession with Father Joe then we participated in the 5 pm Mass with the St Patrick's community. Three other people also came to join us for Mass. Fr Mulcrone said Mass in Total Communication, and it was exciting for all of the Deaf to see a priest Sign Mass! We finished off the day with dinner together and some social time. Unfortunately, we forgot to bring the camera, so we have no pictures - but everyone had a great time!
We next plan to have a Deaf Reconciliation Service in the Spring with Father Mike Depcik. Father Mike is a Deaf priest who currently lives in Chicago. Watch this site for more information on the date and time of this special Service!
